FORT LOUDOUN CHAPTER, NSDAR

WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA

"Honor the Past, Strengthen the Present, Plan for the Future"

        FORT LOUDOUN CHAPTER HISTORY:

In 1921, the Fort Loudoun Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, was founded by Katherine Glass Greene, owner of most of the land and buildings of Fort Loudoun built in 1756 by George Washington "for the protection of the adjacent inhabitants from the barbaraties daily committed by the French and their Indian allies." The chapter gavel and gavel stand are made from wood from the original Fort Loudoun.

On December 2, 1921, after lunch at Fort Loudoun (home of Mrs. Greene), Dr. Kate Waller Barrett, Virginia State Regent, organized the Fort Loudoun Chapter at Washington’s Headquarters. There were twenty-eight organizing members and twenty-two additional members who joined the first year for a total of 50 charter members; the chapter has, on occasion, had as many as 155 members.  Mrs. Greene served as the first Regent of the chapter from 1921-1924.

Fort Loudoun Chapter projects through the years have included marking the sites of historic buildings, marking Revolutionary War patriot graves and member graves; presenting U.S. flags to schools, public buildings, scout troops, naturalized citizens, and others; presenting Good Citizen awards to high school seniors, presenting awards to young American History and Flag Essay Contest winners; presenting an annual award to an Outstanding American History Teacher; presenting an annual Nursing Scholarship to a graduate of a local high school; and encouraging the promotion of history, patriotism, and education throughout the community.
